How Snowboard Guide earns money, which links are commercial, and the commitments that come with publishing affiliate links.

Snowboard Guide is free to read because some of the links on it are affiliate links. This page explains exactly what that means, in plain language.

The short version

Some links to retailers on this site are affiliate links. If you click one and buy something, the retailer pays us a commission. You pay the same price you would have paid anyway. The commission does not change what we recommend, which products we include, or where they rank in an article.

An affiliate link is a normal retailer URL with a tracking identifier attached. The identifier tells the retailer that a visit came from Snowboard Guide. If that visit turns into a purchase, the retailer records it and pays us a percentage of the sale.

We work with retail affiliate programmes in the UK and Europe. Individual tracking identifiers are configured centrally in one file in this site's source code, so they can be audited and changed in a single place.

Where we disclose it

  • Every commercial article carries a disclosure notice before the first product link.
  • Every product call-to-action button is marked as a commercial link in the page markup, using the standard rel="sponsored" attribute, and opens in a new tab.
  • This page is linked from the footer of every page on the site.

Our commitments

  1. Commission never determines a recommendation. We do not rank products by payout rate. We do not drop a product because it pays less. We do not add a product because it pays more.
  2. Commercial links are visually and technically distinguishable from editorial links within the site. Internal navigation is never an affiliate link.
  3. We tell you when we have not tested something. Where an assessment is based on published specifications rather than hands-on experience, the article says so.
  4. We do not publish a price as fact. Prices change constantly and stock moves between retailers, so we send you to the retailer's own current listing or search results rather than printing a number that may already be wrong.
  5. We never link to something we would not recommend to a friend buying their own gear.

The affiliate tracking identifiers for this site have not yet been issued. That means the product buttons you see currently carry no tracking identifier at all — they are normal outbound links, and clicking them earns Snowboard Guide nothing.

Until those identifiers exist, the buttons also do not pretend to reach a specific listing. They open a search on the retailer for that brand and category of product, so you land on current stock rather than a page that may not exist. When the tracking identifiers go live, this section will be updated, the buttons will link to the specific products where a verified listing exists, and the date at the top of this page will change.

We are stating this explicitly rather than leaving it vague, because a disclosure that implies an active commercial relationship when there is not one would be misleading in the other direction. Following an affiliate link may cause the retailer or the affiliate network to set a cookie so that a later purchase can be attributed to us.
